Overcoming Fear: The Benefits of Improv Classes
“You should take an improv class!” Nope. Not really what anyone wants to hear. In fact, it’s not something I would say, even though I am teaching Improv classes. I learned a long time ago to not should on people. HA!! I also know that improv can be scary, I also know that in improv, you are not alone and it can change your life.
Sometimes I think there is absolutely no gray area when it comes to Improv. Some love it, some hate it. Some very strong opinions. I’ve heard people say, “Oh my god, I hate improv!” and when I ask why? What is it about improv that you hate so much, I’ve never gotten clear answer. And, that’s fine, I mean, there are a number of things that I “hate” and can’t necessarily articulate a clear ‘why’. Garlic for instance, I just hate it. But anytime I mention to someone that I hate garlic and don’t eat it, they spaz out. “WHAT? YOU DON’T LIKE GARLIC?! OH MY GOD I JUST LOVE GARLIC!” Wow, good for you. I mean if I said I can’t stand snakes… Wait, I can’t stand snakes, I mean, I respect them, I just don’t want them on me.
Once in High School I was hanging out with my friends and then some asshole guys had caught a snake and were chasing us. We got in my friends VW and they threw the poor snake into the car with us. Of course we started screaming, but I don’t have a voice that screams. I have a pretty low range voice, so I sounded more like I was dry heaving. At any rate, as I remember it, I grabbed the little snake and ran out of the VW sounding like I was dry heaving and tossed it in the grass. So, I don’t like snakes, but I’m not going to like kill one or anything. The poor snake was terrified. Stupid boys.
My point is this, I was very scared of the snake, but I didn’t run from the snake. I embraced it, I became friends with the snake, I gently cradled it and I rescued the snake. Or did the snake rescue me?? So….even though improv can be scary, embrace it like a snake and maybe just maybe it can rescue you.
